We’ve just returned from the UK Kitchen Industry’s biggest show, KBB Birmingham 2018, the place where independents view new products and materials. There were plenty of new things to see, in particular the latest crop of veneers from manufacturers in Italy.
We love working with veneers because they are produced in short runs, and each finish is therefore scarce and little seen in magazines and on web sites. The intricate designs of engineered veneers also give depth and shine, creating the ‘wow factor’ in really exceptional kitchen designs, each of which is truly bespoke and a one-off.
The quality of individual veneers can be variable, so we work with a specialist importer who buys direct from the Italian manufacturers and personally inspects the rolls of veneer as they arrive. They are then correctly stored and handled in batches from manufacture through to fabrication, as they are made into kitchen doors and panels according to our designers’ specification. This process is carried out to order, and only if stocks of the desired veneer are actually available in the UK.
Rare, and special, the fine finish of these veneers is best appreciated in person, as their quality is difficult to capture in images. At the show we took snaps of unfinished veneer pieces, which would be lacquered when made into doors and panels, giving added glossy richness and depth. To get a feel for this, see our previous post on precious veneers. The patterns we saw this year were very exciting, and we look forward to having a full set of samples in our studio to expand and update our current collection. Here are some candid shots of the displays at the show:
In addition to the engineered veneers, we were shown a range of stained oak veneers in a range of colours from pale grey and oyster through to charcoal and taupe. The velvety quality of the veneers was exquisite, and we have requested samples of these options as a high priority.
