This interesting and challenging project was situated in a new-build by the River Thames. The project called for an open plan kitchen to be situated in a long area of the house containing a family room at one end, and a dining room at the other. The brief was to design an innovative and family-friendly kitchen in the centre of the space, whilst maintaining the open plan feel and the visual sight-lines of the surrounding space.
We designed a U-shaped kitchen with a teak breakfast bar by Spekva at one end, to divide the kitchen from the family room, and a sophisticated cooking peninsula at the other end. The cooking peninsula contains twin ovens by Miele, underneath a matching hob. Over this area, wall units were specially designed to contain a steel support, to bear the weight of the wall units, so that only two chrome legs were required at one end to support this unusual arrangement. In addition, an extractor was incorporated into the units directly over the hob, and the wall units were designed to open both from the kitchen side, and from the dining room side. This ground-breaking approach maintained the open plan feel, whist still providing adequate storage and ventilation to the room. A further feature of this kitchen is the use of curved cupboards at the two ends of the kitchen, giving a flowing feel, and eliminating sharp corners for the smaller members of the family. This is a creatively designed kitchen with hidden depths, and a host of cutting edge design features and quality materials to enjoy for years to come. |
