The brief for this project was to create an accessible kitchen for an Edwardian property that remained sympathetic to the character of the building. With a busy working life, our client was seeking a practical, low-maintenance kitchen/dining space in a large L-shaped layout.
Our client selected an Access Matters kitchen in Sollers Cherry finish, with cherry coving, and worktops in a combination of high-pressure laminate and Corian. We recommended a Fisher & Paykel dishdrawer as a practical and accessible alternative to a standard dishwasher, and Neff appliances, with a chimney hood in stainless steel over a sleek ceramic induction hob.
To introduce a period feel, our client added Craven Dunnill tiles in cream, with a contrasting dado and frieze in art nouveau style. Amtico flooring in Australian Sandstone provides a warm, non-slip floor surface.
Plenty of shelf space has been provided for the display of collectible items and books, and as much lighting as possible has been incorporated to ensure that the food preparation areas are well-lit even when winter nights draw in.
The sink area is mounted on a rise and fall unit, so that height can be adjusted to suit the client’s needs, and to accommodate any change of wheelchair height in the future. Made entirely from Corian, the sink area is extremely hygienic and easy to clean, and also impervious to water.
This cosy room now contains every modern convenience, and plenty of character. It is clearly the centre of the home, and very much in tune with its surroundings. |
