The brief for this kitchen was to start again from scratch, create much-needed storage space, and provide an area for breakfast and snacks. The room was completely stripped of its original features, the original ceiling renewed with downlighters and a new ceramic floor laid. By adopting a U-shaped layout, we were able to create a very efficient work area. A central island was incorporated to provide more storage, and an extended bar area specified at the end of the gently curved beech worksurface to provide an informal seating area.
The client selected a Shaker style kitchen in lacquered cream finish with bow handles in matt nickel steel. Our designer specified high-quality worksurfaces in solid beech by Spekva. Neff integrated appliances in stainless steel were employed throughout, and a feature has been made of the modern central hob area, with freestanding stainless steel extractor hood and gleaming steel splashback by Neff. Unsightly areas, such as the fuseboard, were positioned inside a new corner larder unit, and an American style side-by-side fridge freezer in brushed stainless steel was positioned at the end of a run of cabinets to provide iced water for the adjacent informal dining area. Our clients were delighted with this practical and spacious arrangement of their new kitchen, and we feel that modern materials have been used here to superb effect to create a 21st century family kitchen. |
